In a world where science fiction meets fantasy, I bring history, institutions, engineering, and human choices into one story. Far-reaching changes are lived by individual people and shaped through the actions of many.
The writing process
The novel already has an overall outline, world and character development, and chapter drafts. As I write, I attend to relationships, the causal links between events, and the rules of the world, allowing the setting to shape the story rather than simply frame it.
Bringing questions of civilization back to ordinary lives
Civilization explores how history is gradually discovered through records and objects, how technology and institutions enter ordinary lives, and how collective work changes situations that seem to demand a lone hero. In writing, I want large-scale change to be felt first through bodies, relationships and choices, before the world’s explanations unfold.
